At The Rowan Tree, nothing arrives by accident.
The Rowan Tree is not part of a big corporation. It is owned by Michael and Smudge, two individuals who are not in it for the money, but a passion for making people smile and a strong sense of community.
Every single item on our shelves has been chosen by us - one by one, supplier by supplier, box by box. We don’t bulk-buy container loads. We don’t fill warehouses. We don’t stock things just because they’re trending.
If we like it, we stock it.
If we don’t, we don’t.
It’s that simple.
Selected, Not Stocked
We’re incredibly picky about quality. If something feels flimsy, poorly made, or designed just to hit a price point, it doesn’t make it through our door.
We believe in value for money - not “cheap”, not throwaway, not tat - but items that feel good in the hand, last well, and make someone smile when they open them.
Most of what we carry arrives in small batches. That means when something’s gone, it might genuinely be gone. We prefer it that way. It keeps our collection fresh, interesting and personal — rather than repetitive and mass-produced.
You won’t find endless rows of the same thing.
You’ll find pieces we’ve genuinely fallen for.
A Collection We Believe In
We don’t choose products based on spreadsheets alone. Of course the numbers have to make sense - we are a small business - but the first question is always:
Would we give this as a gift ourselves?
If the answer isn’t a wholehearted yes, we move on.
That’s because we don’t see The Rowan Tree as a high-volume money machine. We see it as part of the fabric of Budleigh Salterton. A place where people come to find something meaningful - whether it’s a birthday present, a thank you, a new baby gift, or just a little something to brighten someone’s day.
When we recommend something, we’re recommending it personally.
Community Over Commodity
Being a small, independent shop in Budleigh Salterton means community comes first.
In winter, we see familiar local faces. In summer, we welcome visitors discovering the town for the first time. Either way, we want people to feel that they’ve stepped into something thoughtful - not just another generic retail space.
We’d rather sell fewer things we truly believe in than pack the shop with products we don’t.
